How Does An Electric Gate Opener Work?

There isn’t much difference in operating an electric gate opener and a garage door opener. When you click the provided hand-held transmitter in your vehicle, a radio signal is sent to a receiver box which is installed near the gate. The receiver relays the message to the control box that activates a circuit which starts movement in the gate opener arm. The arm will physically swing or slide the gate open. The gate can be set to then close by pressing the transmitter button again or to close automatically after an assigned amount of time.

What Gates Will An Electric Gate Opener Work On?

Electric gate openers are manufactured to work with various swing and sliding gates. Each has power rating to compensate for the variety of sizes and weight of each gate.

Swing gate openers come in two basic styles: Linear and Articulated. The Articulated Arm style is pad installed and works better on heavier than normal gates and high use situations. It is not recommended to use a solid wood gate, as wind resistance could pose a problem. It also generates an additional strain on the wood frame.

Swing gate equipment can be electro-mechanical or electro-hydraulic in nature. Electro-mechanical equipment is generally dedicated for the home user and has a duty cycle that suits family residences and driveways that are not busy throughout the day. Electro-hydraulic equipment is generally dedicated for a higher duty cycle and is suitable for busy entrances and prestige gates. Post-mounted operators (Mechanical or Hydraulic) are fixed to the gatepost and a sturdy cross member on the gate.

SLIDING GATE Openers

Sliding gates offer several advantages over swing gates. A sliding gate requires smaller space, which allows the full length of the driveway to be usable for parking vehicles. It also provides higher security due to the resistance to being pushed. Sliding gates will also work on an upward sloping driveway where a pair of swing gates would not be able to open inward.

Will An Electric Gate Opener Work With My Gate?

Can it move without dragging on the ground?
Are the gate posts strong enough and secured in the ground with concrete to minimize flex or twist?
